 Its finals weeks and the last blog of 2020, yay!

Looking back on the semester I think the STEM class was valuable. I learned some new things, but looking forward I think there are some opportunities for me to grow and I think the STEM class could help. I believe our class is highly diverse with the majority of the people transferring from a two year institution. Since most of us have already made it through two years successfully, we have already learned how to prepare, study and know what type of learner we are. I think the STEM class should focus more on how to write a resume or build a CV, the process of graduate school applications (GRE's, LSAT, assistantships etc) and how to navigate employment after graduation without it being taxing on the professors or students. Talking with other students, I think that these are areas that are not taught in other classes and ultimately will make us better prepared for our future.

Gel Electrophoresis DR-0172

Last week in lab myself and other S-STEM scholars were working with a protein known as Deinococcus Radioduran- 0172 lactonase to perform a gel electrophoresis. Our first step in the process was making an Agrose gel.  We then poured in a  TAE buffer.  After mixing our DR-0172 with a blue tracking dye, the gel electrophoresis is ready to separate the DNA, RNA and proteins. The experiment was successful as you can see from the band being illuminated under a uv light.

     How have your goals changed over the time since you started to school until now?  Have the changes been big or small?  Early in my academia I thought I wanted to be a wildlife biologist but after taking a summer class in Tahiti I quickly learned I wasn't motivated by animal behavior. I also did a summer internship at a wildlife sanctuary and learned that I get grossed out by blood and guts. So as I progress through my classes I have adapted and fine tuned my interests through trial and error.

  If you could go back in time, what advice would you give your "freshman self" or your "first-day-at-ASU self"? If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to be easier on myself. I've pushed myself to take heavy course loads so that I can graduate as quick as possible. But I have learned that if I focus on now instead of the future I am more satisfied with the results.
